Extra Allotments for Thornbury (EAT) Campaign

The allotments campaign is lobbying for more allotments in the area. We want more allotments for Thornbury and some allotments for Alveston.

As a result of lobbying by Sustainable Thornbury and others, it looks like as though there will be new allotment sites soon. Three sites are proposed:-

  1. A field near Alveston;

  2. A field near Eastwood Park Garden Centre;

  3. A field adjoining Thornbury Leisure Centre.

Alveston

This site is a small plot of one and a half acres off Forty Acre Lane. It has been offered by Alveston resident Joan Hawkins. Only Alveston parish residents may have allotments at this site.

The site will be managed by the Alveston Allotments Society. For further details, or to apply for an allotment, ring the secretary of the Alveston Allotments Society on 01454-414905 or email clerk@alvestonpc.co.uk.

Eastwood Park

The newly formed Extra Allotments for Thornbury committee is in the process of negotiating an agreement with the landowner.

Unfortunately we have encountered problems with securing this site. We are not sure whether we will be able to  proceed.  In the meanwhile the committee is pursing the site in Thornbury behind the Leisure Centre.  This  is waiting for South Gloucestershire to agree the area available for allotments. We are currently working with them on this.

All those who have registered an interest in the Eastwood site will stay on the list for allotment sites in the area.

The site is off the approach road to Eastwood Park Garden Centre, signposted from the A38 just south of Falfield. It is currently unimproved farmland so ideal for organic allotment cultivation. For all those people patiently waiting for an allotment in Thornbury it would be worth considering travelling into the countryside where there is peace and quiet and a wonderful rural outlook. It is only a six minute drive from Thornbury, less than 3 miles to cycle.

Thornbury Leisure Centre

There is a proposal to create allotments in part of the field used as an overflow car park at the Thornbury Leisure Centre. For further details or to register an interest please contact the EAT campaign at allotments@sustainablethornbury.org. We are hoping this might come to pass in late 2010 or early 2011.

If you would like to register your interest in this site please email the EAT campaign at allotments@sustainablethornbury.org or telephone 01454-856539. The steering group is currently negotiating with the landlord and would like to be sure that there will be sufficient interest to make this a viable site.

Background

Currently the only allotments we know about in Thornbury and Alveston are the Daggs allotments at the top of the High Street in Thornbury. There are currently 50 people on the waiting list for allotments there. The waiting list has been closed, so we do not know how many other people would like to have allotments.

For those with small gardens, allotments offer the land to grow some or all of our own fruit and vegetables. Growing our own food is very sustainable - there are no food miles and we can grow without chemical fertilisers or pesticides. We can grow for taste rather than shelf life and eat it within minutes of picking.  And it's good fun.

We are pressing local Councils to provide land for allotments, and looking at other options.
